Port tutorial
« on: May 01, 2011, 04:25:41 PM »
Hi,

Since Icam is a iphone app. And since a lot of people in here have Mac's and therefore Airport Extreme it would be great if you can make a quick tutorial on how to open up the ports. I tried, and I did read both on this forum and using the links.. but I still can't make it work.

Thanks
JK

Did you go to http://portforward.com/ link from the forum post? They have default port forwarding instructions for a number of different routers (including Airport Express) along with screenshots.

Here is a direct link to the port forwarding instructions for the Airport Express: http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Apple/AirPortExtreme/default.htm

Please remember that you will need to forward UDP (not TCP) ports 12000-12100 to the computer running the iCamSource. - http://skjm.com/forum/index.php?topic=402.0

If you are still having a problem with those instructions, please let you know which step you are having difficultly with.

Yes that was what I did, but their tutorial must be very old, since it does not look like that now on OSX10.6.7

I hope that you will make an updated tutorial for all mac users, both with and without airport?

Thanks,
Jacob

There are some instructions for setting up port forwarding using the Airport Utility here: http://welcome.toyourmac.com/port-forwarding-on-an-airport-express/

The only difference would be on Step 4, you'll need to enter "12000-12100" in the Public UDP Port(s) field and the Private UDP Port(s) field.  Leave both TCP fields blank.
Once this is done and you've enabled port forwarding in the iCamSource program, you should be able to access your iCamSource.

To enable port forwarding in the iCamSource program, follow the directions in this forum post: http://skjm.com/forum/index.php?topic=182.msg644#msg644

Hi,

You are linking to a app. And another link to a tread that has been linked to before. Sorry, but it does not work for me since the airport software looks very different on my mac than that of the link.

If you don't want to make a step by step tutorial - which I asked for in the beginning of this thread/question - then please just communicate that. Then I will just remove icam since it is worthless to me when it is not working.

I hope you will though.

Thanks,
J

You may also try enabling NAT-PMP in your AirPort and checking the Auto-Config Router checkbox in the iCamSource instead of manually forwarding ports.

- - -

To enable NAT-PMP in the AirPort Extreme, open the AirPort Utility application. (In Mac OS X it is in Applications > Utilities. In Windows it should be in your Start Menu.)

1. In the AirPort Utility, select your AirPort Extreme and click the Manual Setup button.
2. Select Internet > NAT.
3. Check the "Enable NAT Port Mapping Protocol" check box.
4. Click the update button to save the settings and restart your router.

- - -

To manually forward ports in the AirPort Extreme, open the AirPort Utility application. (In Mac OS X it is in Applications > Utilities. In Windows it should be in your Start Menu.)

1. In the AirPort Utility, select your AirPort Extreme and click the Manual Setup button.
2. Select Advanced > Port Mapping.
3. Click the "+" to add a new service, and enter 12000-12100 as the Public and Private UDP ports. Use the computer that is running the iCamSource's internal IP address as the Private IP Address. You can leave the TCP port entries blank.
4. Click "Continue" and name it "iCamSource" and click Done.
5. Click the update button to save the settings and restart your router.

Hi there,

Opening airport utility > manual > internet - I don't find any NAT..!!
Opening airport utility > Advance - I don't find any port mapping..!!

I can't attach pictures on this forum, otherwise I would do so. (when hitting insert image button, only thing that happens is a text like this )

You can upload pictures to third-party image hosting sites (like http://tinypic.com/ or http://imageshack.us/) and embed or link to them from the forum.

When you click Internet do you only see the "Internet Connection | TCP/IP" tabs instead of the "Internet Connection | TCP/IP | DHCP | NAT" tabs? If so, is your Connection Sharing setting (under Internet > Internet Connection) set to "Off (Bridge Mode)" instead of "Share a public IP address" ? If so, then your AirPort is in bridge mode and is not acting as a router on your network, so you won't be able to forward ports with it.

Ahh, now I am getting closer to the problem. It was OFF and now I see the NAT.

But.. still conflicting.

- It ask's me what service, and I have to choose?
- And the private IP is locked - only the last 3 digits is possible to change. And my ip is not even close.

If you were having problems connecting with iCam when your AirPort was in Bridge mode then putting it in "Share a public IP address" mode probably is not going to help the situation if there is already another router on your network.

What error message were you seeing in iCam when you were attempting to connect? Were you having problems connecting when your phone was connected to the same local WiFi network as the computer running the iCamSource, when your phone was connected via 3G, or both?
