Inconsistant Connection
« on: August 12, 2010, 02:03:14 PM »
I have had iCam for several months and finding the connection to be inconsistant.

3Gs iPhone 0s4.01
Comcast Internet
AT&T iPhone service.

On WiFi it works all the time with either the camera or ManyCam.
On 3G it sometimes connects and then a few hours later does not connect.  Some days it will not connect at all.  Sometimes if I do not connect on WiFI first, it will connect on 3G.  Today while at BWI airport it gave the usual source connection error but connected on WiFi when I got home.

This happens with or without checking to use port forwarding.
iCamSource is 1.4.2.5 Beta

Any thoughts?

Do you have uPNP enabled on your router? It needs to be enabled so icamsource can make the necessary port forwarding changes. If you do have it enabled, have you rebooted your router since enabling it?

If neither of this tips help, you might try setting up port forwarding manually. Also, in the port forwarding discussion on these boards, there's a link to a site that you can use to verify that the required ports are actually open.

If none of these tips help, you might provide the make/model of your router to the SKJM guys. There is at least one known router that doesn't forward ports correctly.

Thanks OUAnthony. :)

Just one addition: iCamSource 1.4.2.6 is the earliest version that contains the Auto-Config Router checkbox that uses UPnP and NAT-PMP to automatically forward the ports in routers that support it. It can be downloaded here:

Windows:  http://skjm.com/icam/iCamSetup1.4.2.6.exe
Mac:  http://skjm.com/icam/iCamSource1.4.2.6.dmg

The checkbox was functional in 1.4.2.5 in my installation, or at least one could check it.

I have now installed 1.4.2.6.

What applications in UPnP need to be checked Enabled in my BEFSR41 router?

I have been using port forwarding since day one as that was the only way to make it work. After installing 1.4.2.5 I have played with auto-config but again not very successfully. When the auto-config box is checked it reports error, as .6 version. Perhaps because nothing is checked for UPnP in the router with Port Forwarding unchecked in the router?   -Doug

The purpose of the Auto-Config Router checkbox is to automatically configure the port forwarding settings in your router, so you shouldn't really have both the Auto-Config Router and the Port Forward Range checkboxes checked at the same time. If you have setup port forwarding, does the following port checker link (when opened from the computer running the iCamSource) report port 12000 as open in your router? - http://portchecker.net/udp.php?p=12000

Got sidetracked with projects.   Previously when I ran the port test it passed.  I think all the playing with 1.4.2.5 and now .6 I have a messed up router as the port test comes back blocked.

Will keep experimenting as nothing works now but the WiFi iCam connection to iPhone

If you unplug and re-plug in your router that should clear any lingering UPnP auto-configuration settings. In terms of your manual port forwarding settings, the things to check are the port forward range (12000-12100) the port type (UDP) and the internal IP address of your computer. If your computer is configured to dynamically receive an IP address from the router via DHCP it may have changed since you last setup the port forwarding rule in your router.
