questions about mulitiple computer access to just one cam
« on: May 26, 2010, 09:23:08 AM »
I have my Mac set up at home with my webcam to monitor my puppies, everything works great and I can see them on my iPhone- however I want to know if I can see them on my work computer? Do I need to download the source on this computer and enter in certain items? Keep in mind, I am new to this and not a techie  ???- so when replying please use common words and not techie foreign languages  ;D

Ultimately I just want to see what my iPhone can see but just on my work computer...

thanks,

vida

You can view your webcams (video-only) from a desktop computer using iCamWeb : http://skjm.com/icam/web

iCamWeb uses a Java applet to connect to iCamSource, so Java must be installed on the computer.

Ok I'm trying to have a family member log into the webcam. He is in another part of town so obviously not on my wireless network.  I don't want him to use the icam/web feature because that means I have to leave my computer on all the time with the program up and running (ie, when I turn off the icam program, the icam/web page freezes).

So, I want him to be able to log into the camera whenever he wants. Shouldn't he be able to do this if I give him my password for both the camera and the icam software?  He is not able to connect to the camera for some reason, but we both have the same info typed in (ie, wireless URL address). He uses Windows 7, I use Vista.

thanks-

icamsource is the program that accesses your webcam and is constantly "listening" for an incoming connection from your iPhone/iCam. Once it makes a connection, it starts sending images/audio to your phone. Without the icamsource program running, there is no program on your computer running that will accept the incoming connection AND send the images to your phone. So you have to leave your computer (and icamsource) running 24/7 if you want access to it constantly.

Ok thanks, that helps. I guess I was trying to have my family member run icamsource on his computer, then retrieve the webcam images onto my iphone using his computer.  This way my computer can be off when no one is home.  But I guess this is not possible since his computer is not in my network.

Actually it is possible...but it'd have to be an IP camera. Also, you would need to set up port forwarding so that anyone (specifically your family member) would be able to access the camera from the Internet. You would also need a free dynamic dns so your network/camera (which probably has a dynamic IP address...one that changes occasionally) can always be found. You can get this free account/software through www.dyndns.org. I use it and it works beautifully!

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll definitely look into this.
