recover from dropped internet access
« on: September 01, 2010, 06:13:13 AM »
First of all, this is my first post here and I am a new iCam user.  I LOVE this program!   It works so well and is so easy to use.  I've tried others but this is, by far, the easiest.

I have iCamSource running on an old MacBook Pro with OS X 10.4.11.  My internet connection is WiFi to a network provided by a Cradlepoint CTR-500.  The CTR-500 gets it's 'internet' from a USB attached WAN device (in this case, an old cell phone).  I'm in an area where this is the most economical choice, fwiw.

Anyhow, this works great, providing exactly what I need.

However, if the 'internet' goes down (for instance, the cell phone loses it's weak signal) or the power goes out (which power cycles the CTR-500 but not the MacBook Pro, since it has a battery) my iCam viewer loses the feed.

No amount of restarting iCam will get it back.

The only way I have found so far to recover from the loss of internet access is to physically stop & restart iCamSource.

Is there a way to have iCamSource / iCam recover from this loss automatically?

Thanks!

Jay

It sounds like iCam might be getting confused in your particular situation because the computer is probably getting assigned a new IP address every time your cell phone loses it's connection or the router loses power.  This is a situation that doesn't occur with a normal residential or office network.

One thing that might help in your case is to try configuring your computer to use a static IP address.  That way it won't be assigned a new internal IP address when the router power comes back or the cell phone connection comes back.

There's more information about configuring your computer to use a static IP address here: http://portforward.com/networking/staticip.htm

I also have this problem.
In some countries (for example here in Germany) dynamic IPs are basically standard. Most ISPs disconnect every 24 hours and change your IP.

A check for new IP every XX minutes with automatic fresh login would be a great feature.
A reconnect option every XX minutes would also be sufficient.

At the moment a have to reconnect manually every morning. Not that much work but it gets quite annoying after some weeks.

Floha - What error message do you see when you try to connect after your IP has been reset? Do you have problems connecting via 3G, WiFi, or both?

Source Connection Error
One or more of the iCamSources returned by the iCam Broker Server could net be connected to.

Doesnt work in lokal Wlan at work and 3G at home after my ISP reconnects (can only try 3G at home a few hours later without restarting the sources)
I also didnt have the possibility to try another Wlan so far.

At the moment im thinking of running the sources with command lines as a timed service and restart it at the same time as the reconnect. Ill see how that goes next week.
