Using laptop as additional cam source
« on: October 03, 2010, 09:43:48 AM »
I have looked through the threads seeing any posts about similar set ups but haven't found any.  I think perhaps I am trying to set up something that icam doesn't support.  Here is my set up:

On my Mac Pro, I have a web cam and 2 IP cameras running on single install of iCam 2.1.  I had to go  through all the troubleshooting to get all to work on wifi and 3G  but with port forwarding all works fantastically.  I have a iphone 4 with latest ios.  BTW, I love the 2.1 update.

What I want to do is to be able to use my laptops as temporary additional cameras.  For instance, put my laptop in the bedroom and wife's laptop in the den to add two additional cams when we go out of town.  I assumed that even though the new 2.1 can run multiple cameras, that I could install icam on the laptop, put in my same login and password and it would communicate with icam on my iphone as an additional camera.  It doesn't work.  I open up icam and my three cams show up with no additional cams.  I tried it also using 1.4.2.6 on my laptop as well.

I got this to sorta work when I was running multiple instances of the earlier iCam on Mac Pro, where it would intermittantly see the icam on the laptop.

Am I am attempting to do something not currently supported by icam?

Thanks in advance for your help.

It might be an issue with port forwarding. As long as you use the same username and password on each instance of icamsource, you should be able to view cameras from all instances of icamsource.

You might have to set up a static IP address for each computer running icamsource, and then set up manual port forwarding for each of those instances/computers. When the router is receiving uPNP commands from multiple computers, but for similar port ranges, it might be confusing the router. I had similar issues, but once I set up manual port forwarding, it started working like a champ.

If you use the exact same login and password in both iCamSources, you should be able to view them all on the iPhone simultaneously.

OUAnthony is right, it might be a port forwarding issue.  If you needed to manually forward a range of ports to get the first computer working, then you'll need to forward a totally different range of ports to the second computer.  For example, you could forward the port range 12000-12100 to computer #1 and the port range 12101-12200 to computer #2.  Make sure that iCamSource on computer #1 is set up to use the 12000-12100 range and iCamSource on computer #2 is set up to use the 12101-12200 range.

If you're using the Auto-Config Router option, please let me know what error message appears next to the Auto-Config Router checkbox when you start iCamSource.
