Any compatible USB wireless (not IP) cameras
« on: October 13, 2009, 11:45:38 AM »
Looking for a camera that I can place in a room where my computer is not located, & not an IP camera. I have an X10 wireless that doesn't seem to work with icam.  I also only have a dial up connection (DSL not available in my location).

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

The only wireless cameras I am aware of are network IP cameras, unfortunately.

I am also guessing that a dial-up connection will further reduce the possible frame rate, possibly down to one frame every 5-8 seconds.

Do you know if an IP camera will work with a dial-up connection & if so which ones are compatible with icam? I need a very basic camera hopefully easy to set up (using window xp).

Thanks

Any Windows-compatible network IP camera should work that supports MJPEG video. The ones that we actually own and use are:

Linksys WVC54GCA - http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/products/WVC54GCA
AirLink101 SkyIPCam500W - http://www.airlink101.com/products/aicn500w.php
AirLink101 SkyIPCam747W - http://www.airlink101.com/products/aicn747w.php

If your dial-up connection connects directly to your computer then you are also going to want to have a wireless router that both the computer and camera will connect to.

Thanks for the input.

Do you know of any wireless routers that work with dial-up.  Seems the ones I have looked at all require a dsl or cable connection.

Thanks

I believe you can still use your dial-up connection that is directly connected to your computer and also connect both your computer and a network IP camera to a wireless router. The camera won't be able to directly access the Internet, but your computer will be able to connect to both the camera (through the router) and the Internet (through your dial-up modem).
