iPhone Data Usage
« on: February 09, 2011, 03:56:32 PM »
Hi There,

I'm sure this has been asked before, but running a few searches I wasn't able to find a thread about it.

How much bandwith does it use on the iPhone?  I've got this set up as a PuppyCam and have it running on my iPhone and/or iPad pretty much the whole day while I'm at work.

I have read that "Regarding the bandwidth usage, when an iCamSource is idle it is sending a small amount of data (about 100 bytes) every 5 seconds or so to the iCam Broker Server to let it know it is still there. That equates to about 61 MB of data uploaded per month if it is just sitting there 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. When iCam or iCamWeb is connected, then naturally the image data being uploaded will be added to the total."

Any idea how much iPhone data it uses an hour? I've got a 1 gig/month data plan, and it would cost me a lot of money if I went over this!

Thanks in advance, and if this has already been answered please feel free to post the link to that thread.

Much appreciated.

Dan

An iPhone running iCam (displaying a webcam) all day long will use a lot of data.  How long are you running it each day?  Is it connected to the 3G network, or to a Wi-Fi network during that time?  If the iPad is connected to a Wi-Fi network, then it won't use up any of the data from your 3G data plan.

iCam uses about 10-20 kB/sec while it's viewing a webcam fullscreen.  That's about 40-80 MB an hour.  That will add up to 1 gig pretty quickly if it's left running continuously the whole work-day, every day.
