iCam Pro Support / Upload & Download Bandwidth Questions
« on: June 03, 2015, 06:18:28 PM »

I have read many "bandwidth" threads in these forums.  I still have a few questions.

I'm putting this in the iCam Pro forum because I will upgrade as soon as it becomes available for Android, and because HD video questions are included.

I realize this looks like a lot of questions, but I've tried to be concise, and the answers will be extremely helpful in making decisions about Internet speed and possible HD webcams.

UPLOAD BANDWIDTH

I have read many bandwidth threads and understand that only a small amount of data is sent when the video is not being viewed on iCam (or Pro).  I also understand that when viewing a camera feed, obviously more data is sent.  I'd like to try to quantify that to help with Internet speed choices.

I have read elsewhere about video call bandwidth requirements.  The information I found amounts to about this:

-- VGA resolution requires roughly 0.2-0.5 Mbps upload per camera.

-- HD resolution requires roughly 1.5 Mbps upload per camera.

Here are my questions:

1) When I use iCam (or Pro) to view the "camera summary" screen (for example, four quadrants for four cameras), is iCamSource (or Pro) combining the feeds locally and sending just the equivalent of one camera feed's bandwidth?  Or does it upload the equivalent of four camera feeds?

2) When I choose a camera to view, are the upload estimates above (0.2-0.5 Mbps VGA, 1.5 Mbps HD) accurate?

3) Would iCam (or Pro) ever upload more than the equivalent of one camera feed's bandwidth (other than adding a little overhead)?

4) I recently upgraded my cable Internet connection from 1 Mbps upload to 5 Mbps upload.  Some of that is used by cloud backups, but that shouldn't be much of an issue when I'm not here.  So something like 4+ Mbps upload should be available--could iCam Pro ever use that much?

DOWNLOAD BANDWIDTH

I saw this in admin replies to various bandwidth questions:

Quote
On local Wi-Fi, you should see a few frames per second.
On a remote Wi-Fi hot spot, you should see about a frame per second.
On 3G, Apple requires us to keep the framerate less than 1 frame every 2 seconds (0.5 fps).  This has been the limit since iCam was first released.
On EDGE, you'll probably see about one frame every 5 seconds or so, or as low as 1 frame every 10 seconds if you have a poor EDGE signal.

A) What remote mobile data (non-wifi) performance (frames per second) would you expect on 4G or 4G LTE, for VGA (640x480) and for HD (1280x720 or 1920x1080) resolutions?

B) I assume the statement quoted above for remote wifi (about 1 fps) is for VGA resolution.  What remote wifi performance (frames per second) would you expect for HD (1280x720 or 1920x1080) resolutions?

The answers to these questions will be most helpful for users looking to upgrade to HD webcams.

Thank you in advance.

(Plan to upgrade to HD webcams when iCam Pro for Android is available)

iCam version 1.6.3
Android 4.4.3

Thank you for the reply.

I'm surprised that there is more business opportunity in the Apple Watch than in iCam Pro for Android, but I don't want to tell you how to run your business.  Please just know that there appears to be a lot of interest in iCam Pro for Android.  I for one cannot wait to upgrade to it and then to upgrade to HD webcams.  Thanks for all your efforts on this really well-done webcam package.  :)

iCam Support / "Motion" Button on Zoom Screen
« on: June 03, 2015, 05:15:45 PM »

--------------------------------------------------------------------

iCamSource 2.7.2 (it looks like that's the latest version for WinXP)
Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3
Intel Core2 Duo E4600 @ 2.40GHz, 2GB RAM

iCam version 1.6.3
Android 4.4.3
HTC One M7, 12GB of 32GB used
Carrier is T-Mobile, phone is not rooted or unlocked

--------------------------------------------------------------------

After touching one of the iCam camera quadrants, iCam zooms to that camera.  Touching that Zoom screen brings up this:

I'm asking about the "Motion" button in the middle of the bottom (with my red oval added)... I have tried it both ways, with the button "off" or cleared, and with the button "on" which places the audio icon on the button (as in the image above).  I suspected turning audio on would record an audio file of the motion event--but I don't get any difference.  Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks in advance.

iCam Support / Re: Not Receiving Push Notifications
« on: June 03, 2015, 04:47:55 PM »
Thank you for the reply.  I cleared the iCam App data as you recommended.  When I started iCam again, it of course asked me to login, and that is where I found my problem.  There are checkbox options on the right-hand side of the login screen.  The middle option, "Auto-Lock Override" had confused me the first time I logged in.  I had gone online and did a search and figured out what it was for.  Then I finished logging in without noticing the 3rd (bottom) checkbox option, which is "Notifications".  I checked it this time and the notifications work great.  So I feel like an idiot but it's working.  :)

I also figured out that on Android I can long-touch a motion even to get the option to delete it--very nice, rather than having to do it through Dropbox, which is where I have my motion images being stored.  I have one question about the Zoom screen, but I'll start a new thread for that.

The more I use iCam and iCamSource, the more impressed I am with it's functionality and simplicity.  You folks have done a really nice job with this package.  I can't wait for Android iCam Pro to come out, so that I can move to that and upgrade to HD webcams.

Thanks.

No reply after a full day?  Maybe I'm misunderstanding this forum--is there a more official mechanism to ask support questions?

iCam Support / Not Receiving Push Notifications - Solved!
« on: May 31, 2015, 06:30:39 PM »
Hello,

I installed iCam and iCamSource yesterday and was impressed with the ease of getting things working.
The only issue I've had is that I have not received even one push notification.

"Notification Threshold" was at 1 -- I changed it to 2 today but as expected it didn't fix my not receiving push notifications.

"Event Image Min" was at 1 -- I changed it to 4 today to reduce the number of false motion events.
I haven't played with the Detection Frequency or Motion Sensitivity yet--these should not affect the problem I'm having.

Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3

In Android "Apps", "Show notifications" is checked for this app

Carrier is T-Mobile, phone is not rooted or unlocked

Thanks in advance.

Hello, new iCam user and really liking it.  I recently upgraded my internet speed to 5 Mbps up, so I think it will handle multiple HD webcams.  So...

It's been over 3 months since there was a post in this thread, so I think it's legit to ask how iCam Pro for Android is coming along.  Any idea on a release date yet?

Thank you.
