Title: iCamSource 2.4.5 BETA - Foscam Audio Support
Post by: Stefan on February 06, 2012, 01:32:33 PM
A new BETA version of the iCamSource (2.4.5) is now available and includes audio support for Foscam network IP cameras. We have tested this version with our Foscam FI8908W and FI8918W test cameras using the http://x.x.x.x/video.cgi MJPEG URL.

The new version can be downloaded below:

Mac - http://skjm.com/icam/iCamSource2.4.5.dmg
Windows - http://skjm.com/icam/iCamSetup2.4.5.exe

Please let us know how things go or if you have any questions or concerns.

Thanks! :)

Looking forward to audio support for Cisco-Linksys WVC80N and PTZ support for the Asktak MOLE. :)

Unfortunately the audio sent by the camera is 4-bit ADPCM, which is extremely compressed and noisy. It should sound the same if you listen to it with your web browser.

After installing this beta I am getting nothing but source connection errors over both wifi and 3g.  I am using 2 Foscam fi8918w cams on a mac.  It worked fine before.

Update: it seems to be working now. The audio is beyond horrible.  However I havent been able to listen through the browser.

The ability to talk back through iCam has been requested in the past and is currently on our list of potential features to implement in the future.

Hi,
just tried the BETA width Foscam FI8918W, but there is no sound...

Normally I have about 10 Cams running, for testing the BETA, I cleaned the registry first, installed the BETA and put in just one camera ( Foscam FI8918W ).

This camera runs as it should; only without sound.

I used: http://192.168.xxx.xxx/videostream.cgi and MJPEG.

If I use IE browser on my Windows XP computer, pan/tilt and sound work fine.

If I use  http://192.168.xxx.xxx/videostream.asf?user=xxx&pwd=xxx on my iPhone in the App xyplayer2 I also get sound on my iPhone (without video).

What next?

Try this http://x.x.x.x/video.cgi

Thank you aen,
that was the issue: videostream.cgi does not work if you want to have sound...
It just should be: video.cgi.

Now it works; I reloaded all the cameras, everything is working fine accept for the one Axis cam I use.
The Axis Cam stays silent.
It only gives sound if I use IE browser, ore use the stream:
rtsp://Login:Password@192.168.xxx.xxx/mpeg4/media.amp in VLC Player.
In iCam I use: http://192.168.xxx.xxx/axis-cgi/mjpg/video.cgi?fps=3 it will show the video stream without sound.

I would assume audio is not yet supported for axis cams.

I would assume audio is not yet supported for axis cams.

That is correct. (Unfortunately the various IP camera manufactures do not generally follow the same standards.)

Hi,
back again, just with a note for anyone who uses several different Foscam cameras which support and doesn't support sound.
Those cameras who do support sound (like FI8918W) use: http://192.168.xxx.xxx/video.cgi and MJPEG.

Foscam cameras without sound (like FI8905W) , you better use: http://192.168.xxx.xxx/videostream.cgi and MJPEG.

This way, you avoid the annoying background noise which occur by opening a camera which does not support sound.

That is odd that a camera that doesn't support sound would send out noise instead of silence.

If you connect to the camera using your web browser I am assuming there is no audio link, is that correct? If you open the http://x.x.x.x/videostream.asf URL using the VLC player (http://videolan.org) do you hear the same noisy audio?

Hi Steffan,
I don't think the camera produces this background sound...
In IE Browser surface or VLC Player the Foscam FI8905W stays silent.

I assume it's a kind of 'sound leak' in the app if there are cameras installed who does and doesn't have sound...
Would that be possible?

I have a similar outdoor Foscam camera that doesn't support audio (I am not 100% sure on the model number) and it doesn't result in any sound. The sound would have to be received from a videostream.asf URL ... If the stream doesn't have audio in it then it shouldn't play anything back.

Odd.

I guess if videostream.cgi works for you then that solution should work for other folks who might experience the same issue.

Because of the great distance between some of my cameras and my router, several cameras have a wired connection to the router.
They get together in a 8 port hub; from there goes a (at least 80 meter) cable to my router, perhaps this could be an issue as well...

I'll check this (plug out the FI8918W camera and then there should be silence).

anyway, it isn't much of a problem, since there is a work around  :)

Yay! Great to see this!

Audio doesn't work on one of my six Foscam FI8918W units, and I believe it's just defective hardware.

Audio on all units (of those that work) exhibits loud mechanical background noise. The mic seems quite sensitive, though. Sounds in the room do overpower the background. Automatic gain control by the camera is perhaps involved: when no sound is detected, gain is amped up and produces the noise.

If you need iPhone->Foscam support right now, try Livecams Pro (for iOS at least). (I much prefer iCam but Livecams Pro supports a few extra functions that come in handy.) Livecams Pro exhibits the same background noise, so the background wouldn't seem to be anything that can be fixed on the Mac/PC/smartphone side.

Audio delay in either direction (cam->phone, phone->cam) is about 2 seconds over my LAN.
