Wireless Cams
« on: December 08, 2009, 07:58:29 PM »
Do you have any recommendations on wireless webcams that are compatible with iCam?  Looking for a great cam for under or around $100.  I'm using Windows XP and an Airport Extreme.

Thanks in advance  :)

Do you suffer from loss of connection that people complain about with the Linksys?  People say they have to reset it every few days and it becomes unresponsive over the wireless connection after awhile.

Our WVC54GCA doesn't have that issue, no.

I got the Linksys cam.  Took me about 30 minutes to set up.  Your website for getting the cam's URL was extremely helpful.  Probably would have took me another few hours to figure out what was wrong without it.

Thanks!

Update:
Have had the Linksys WVC54GCA on for 2 weeks straight now and have had no problems.  It has not disconnected at all.  And if it did, it reconnected itself.  Very happy with this camera.

Although...I also have a Logitech Pro 9000 running via USB that froze after a week and a half.

Both are connected to the same PC on an Apple Airport Extreme.

Question:
Is there anyway to build in a reset command in the iCam App to iCam Source program to turn off and back on to reset the cam?  My cam froze a lot before a previous update to iCam Source, after the update I have not had it freeze.  But I also have not had it running as long as 2 weeks before.  Restarting iCam Source unfreezes the cam.  Other than that, I'd have to use a VNC App to remote into my PC to reset iCam Source.

Currently, no, there is no way to stop and start the iCamSource from iCam, but we can add that to the list of features to potentially implement in the future.

Can you advise on wireless cams that are supported by mac osX snow leopard?  The ones listed appear to only be supported by windows.

We all use those cameras with Macs, even though they say they only support Windows. The biggest hurdle is determining what DHCP address the camera receives when you initially plug it into your router.

Here is a blog post someone did about using it with Mac OS X : http://xmetal.me/index.php?id=15

Also, some of the functionality (like sound, I believe) only work with an Active X control in Internet Explorer in Windows, but for iCam, audio isn't supported for network IP cameras yet anyway.

You can always pay hundreds of dollars for an Axis or Panasonic or Canon that does support Mac OS X, but we haven't done that just yet. :)
