Title: Does it support wireless video camera?

Wondering if iCam support wireless camera, such as the Linksys Wireless-G Internet Video Camera... thanks a lot!

I'm glad you asked.  Several users have asked this, so it'll be good to have the info in the forum  :)

Currently, iCam supports USB, Firewire, DV camcorders, and built-in cams on Mac OS X and USB and built-in cams on Windows.  We don't support any network/wifi cams.  The reason for this is that there is no communication standard for network cams.  Each brand of network cam uses their own proprietary communication, which means we would have to develop separately for each brand of network cam.

That said, we'll develop pretty much any requested feature as long as there's enough user interest to justify the development effort.  So, if there seems to be a lot of user demand for network cam support, we may end up adding it in the future.

I hope that answers your question.

I too would appreciate a Linksys Wireless G support. I have two of their cameras and would like to add a few.

Do I understand it correctly that even though I can see my Linksys Wireless G cameras on my computer monitor that I cannot utilize iCam to view it on my iphone? You are not referring to whether it will connect directly to the iphone/camera wirelessly, but whether we can connect via the computer and it's network, right? If this is the case, please let me know when/if it will work and I will purchase a copy asap. I am even willing to pay more for this ability.

iCam currently supports any cam recognized by Windows or Mac OS as a video source.  This generally includes built-in cams, USB cams, and for Mac, firewire cams.  It's not that we specifically block the Linksys from working, it's just that the OS doesn't recognize network cams, such as the Linksys, as video sources.

add one more in support of the Linksys wifi cams! Sure would be nice!
This is a great app! And worth every penny and then some! Like someone
above said, I'd be willing to pay more to have the wifi cam support also,
since thats what we have most of through the house!!

Let me know if you need testers too, for that app, should you
(PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!!!) develop it!!!!

What a cool app!  I can't wait to show the gang at work.   ;D

Extremely interested in wi-fi cam support and would pay extra for this feature.  I'll purchase whichever camera you chose to support.

On Macs, maybe the CamTwist-App could be a solution. This is a Video-Routing Software for OSX. HavenĀ“t testet that though...

I tried CamTwist, it worked fine for me.  On Windows, there's a program called ManyCam that does the same thing.

With both of these programs, you can have your desktop (or just a portion of your desktop, like a window) show up as a webcam to the OS.  I tried both of them with iCamSource on Mac and Windows, and they both worked for me.

Sadly, using ManyCam on Win XP seems to break iCam, requiring a reboot to get it working again.  ManyCam is a great tool.  I can use it with Skype on calls, but it crashes my iCam.  FIXED IT.  The problem was caused with my Cisco VPN client.  You need to connect iCam first, then bring up the VPN.  All works well as long as you start with iCam first.

chuckster,

Thanks for the info.  As I mentioned, ManyCam worked for me when I tried it once on my Windows computer, but that's not exactly comprehensive testing  :)

Does iCamSource work correctly when you use it with a standard built-in or USB webcam?

I solved my problem.  If my Cisco VPN client is running, then iCam won't work.  If I start iCam first, then bring up the VPN - even using ManyCam to capture video (using the desktop mode) from a VPN connection, all works fine.

If you start to support the LinkSys wireless that would be a reason for me to buy one. Give LinkSys a call... maybe you could get some kind of kickback!

Does this seem to be enough user demand?

Wireless and network camera support is on our list of potential features to implement in the future, but it's not currently our highest development priority.

He said earlier that they needed the justification to develop all the softwear to use wifi cams, but realy is it that difficult to get a list and start offering patches to make it work?? ???

The icam source works great with my isight but it will not recognize my sony dv video camera via firewire.  I know the computer Mac sees it b/c i can open ichat and I see both the isight webcam and my dv camera as sources. I can choose the sony as a source in ichat and it works just fine...  so its not a connection error.  Is there something I am missing here?  It's not even showing up as a source- just the built in isight as a source.

thx

sorry i realize this thread was about wireless cams i will repost this as it's own topic.

mgravitt - The Beta IP cam support in iCamSource works for ethernet and Wi-Fi cameras that support MJPEG formatted output.  The WiLife cameras appear to use a different, proprietary interface, and would therefore not be compatible with iCamSource or iCam.

Thanks Jay. Do u c iCam supporting a wilife system n the future?  I love how easy this is to set up and use with my web cam. Would b even more amazing if it could tap into the wilife security system through out the house.  Thanks

mgravitt - We don't have any short term plans to develop wilife support.  That could change in the future, depending on the development effort involved and user feedback (like yours).

Jay / Administrator

In regards to the manycam application on Windows XP, were you able to hear audio on your iphone when using this procedure and if so do you have to have your computer up and running? Right now I'm able to view my Linksys wireless feed on my iphone, without having to have the computer on. It hits my Linksys router and then feeds me the signal to my iphone. Unfortunately I cannot hear audio, I just get the video feed. Any help would be appreciated.

James

jahet1opie - If you have a microphone connected to your computer, it should work with ManyCam.  The microphone will show up in the Audio drop-down list and ManyCam will show up in the Video drop-down list.

Jay

Does the computer have to be on to use manycam? Right now I can view video simply by using the router feed. My microphone is actually on the wireless camera, do you think it would still work?

Post by: Jay on June 05, 2009, 05:37:57 PM
jahet1opie - You have to be running the iCamSource program on your computer in order to view the webcam video in iCam on your iPhone.  ManyCam is software from another company that can turn any window on your computer into a virtual webcam.

The Beta version of iCamSource supports network cameras, but it's video only at this point.  Currently,  iCamSource only supports microphones that are directly connected to the computer.

Yes, I believe the iCamSource is compatible with the AirLink101 AIC250W.

It should work with one of the AirLink 101 URLs from http://skjm.com/icam/mjpeg.php

I too use the WiLife camera and would really like to see it supported. Otherwise the app wasn't exactly money well spent.

Best Buy carries this setup, so I would expect it would be fairly prevalent.

Thanks
