I run 6 cams on a dedicated Windows 7 Pro desktop computer at my home location: 2 Logitech Webcam Pro 9000's and 4 Airlink IP Cams. Three of the IP cams are at a remote location. I use 2 host domains from Dyndns to keep the internet IP addresses up to date so everything is seamless. Once every 2 or 3 weeks, I stop Icamsource on the desktop and clean the UPnP on the router at my home location because we access WiFi with 6 devices and it stacks up. This eventually causes a UPnP issue when restarting Icamsource.

The IP cams are set to 5 fps. Routers at both locations are Netgear N300 WNR2000v2. Home internet is Comcast Cable. Remote location internet is Fairpoint DSL. I bridged the modem/router so it is only a modem and I can use a Netgear router. I would run more than 3 cams at the remote location, but my DSL is weak due to the distance from town.

Computer specs:

HP Compaq DC7800 Desktop PC
Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 2.33GHz
4G Ram
80G Hard Drive
Windows 7 Pro 64-bit

I only have a few programs on this computer: Icamsource, Dropbox and an antivirus program. The two webcams are connected to this computer. I bought this computer refurbished from Newegg for $200. It came with a mouse and keyboard, no monitor and a limited 1 year warranty for parts/labor. Windows 7 Pro lets me remote into it in case I need to restart Icamsource or log in to the computer if power glitches. etc. I can see the computer from my work laptop. I also use my smartphone with Remote RDP app to log in the computer. I was out of the country last week and was able to log in and restart Icamsource.

I know this is more info than you requested, but my setup works well for me and everything I learned over the last few years might help someone else.

A remote reset can be done if you have Icamsource running on a computer capable of remote accesse. I use a Windows 7 Pro with port forwarding for remote access and a host domain in case the IP changes. I use an app on my phone to remote access the computer and can stop/start Icamsource.

I have a few Airlink IP cams and can manually change the focus. I think the lens can be changed for some of the models. If you do not need to record, it would just as easy to use an App on your phone to monitor an IP camera. Ethernet is definitely the way to go.

The Belkin HD Netcam uses H.264 codecs and won't work on Icamsource.

Anthony,

I use a dedicated Windows 7 Pro computer for Icamsource. I can remote into it to stop/start Icamsource, etc. Also have my router set up for remote login so I can check on things there too.Sometimes the IP address for the computer gets reassigned and I have to change the port forwarding in the router. I use Remote RDP on my Droid phone to remote in.

IP cams can be checked remotely with one of several apps on a smartphone. Icamsource cannot run without a computer being on. Some IP cams come with software that can be set up to record on motion, but I have found that it is much simpler to keep a computer on and run Icamsource.

Try hooking up the camera to your mac without the extension cable. If it works, then you'll know that your setup with the extension is not adequate for running Icamsource.

It is possible to turn off Record Motion Events and keep Send Notifications turned on. I have turned off Record Motion Events and wondered why my phone was going crazy as I walked around in front of the cameras!!

Check refurbished computers with 1 year warranty from Newegg. I bought one recently with Windows 7 Pro and run 6 cams and can also remote into it to login after power failure or stop/start Icamsource.

Icamsource is a program that runs on your PC, Icam is an app that you use to access your Icamsource cameras. A login and password is used when starting Icamsource. To accesss that in Icam, you must use the same login and password. What cameras and computer are you using?

I know nothing of Macs, I only have Windows based PC's. In the Windows world, Pro versions of PC's can do Remote Desktop from other computers and smartphones. I have one setup at home. Remote Desktop is enabled, port 3389 is forwarded on the router and I have a host domain setup. I can access that computer from almost anywhere. If the power glitches, I can remote in and login. Icamsource is set to start up after login.

Do Mac's have a remote desktop type feaature?

There is no Icamsource login/password saved anywhere but in your head. Make Icamsource login/password anything you want, then use the same on Icam on your smart phone/Ipad, etc.

That's how it works. Will be several JPEG pics, not video.

What about just using a simple IP camera on the local network?

There are a few Apps to view IP cams remotely. It involves port forwarding and using a host domain (unless you have a static IP address). I have 3 IP cams running remotely without a computer and using Icamsource on a home computer that I can also see remotely. I can also see all IP cams with an App on my Droid phone. I'm not going to get into the details here because it is an Icamsource forum and I love the program.

I have a dedicated computer just for running Icamsource. If you don't want to leave your computer powered on, then you'll have to find another way to do what you want to accomplish.
