: Can I view my laptop cam with iCam and my iPod
: WalkingHeart February 05, 2011, 12:22:46 PM
I've looked through what seems like endless amounts of questions and I can't seem to find one that asks if iCam works with a laptop cam..I live in a Nursing Home and I've had some things stole, So what I want to do is use my laptops (pc) camera to watch my room when I'm out of it on my iPod..Is there a way to do this with iCam..I don't want to spend the money on the app(s) if it won't work..and, As far as the 'on' light goes, I thought I could put a piece of tape across it?? TIA for any help you can give an old man ;D

Yes, iCam will work with your laptop's webcam.

The "Getting Started" section of the iCam Help pages provides step-by-step instructions for setting up both iCam on your iOS device and the iCamSource on your laptop: http://skjm.com/icam/help/

The Setup section that describes setting up the iCamSource application on your computer is what you want: http://skjm.com/icam/help/#setup

(Your laptop is the computer in this scenario.)

Have you downloaded and installed the iCamSource application on your laptop?

If your webcam doesn't show up in the Video drop-down I would:

- Make sure that no other application is using the webcam when you launch the iCamSource.
- Make sure you have the latest webcam drivers installed.
- Try rebooting your computer and then re-launching the iCamSource to see if it shows up then.

Does your webcam work with other applications on your computer?

This is a webcam that is built-in above the laptop's display, is that correct?

Sorry it took so long to get back to you Stefan..I've been a little under the weather..to answer your question, there's no other applications (webcam) running when I try iCamSource..and yes my webcam is built in to the laptops lid..I'm not an expert with computers but I do know a bit about them, although I will say this is my first laptop with a webcam..any other help you can give is much appreciated..

Are there any other webcam applications that you have used successfully with your webcam?

thanks for getting back to me so soon..yes another program would show it called webcam XP5 but I can't find the right application in iTunes..I found the program looking for programs that would do what I want, well when I installed it I couldn't get the webcam to show in it either..then one day I went back to it, figured out how to make the webcam show, and dang if I didn't forget where I found the instructions to do it where..I thought I had bookmarked it but obviously not.. so, any suggestions?? and thanks Stefan for sticking with me..

I am not sure what would make a webcam start working after it had stopped working besides perhaps updating the driver. What is the make and model of your specific laptop? The laptop manufacturer should have the latest webcam driver available for download.

It's a Toshiba Satellite L505..I'm going to see what I can do to see if the driver is up to date..not sure how yet but..Thank you again for hangin' with me..

I would check the Toshiba website for support for your specific laptop. They should have download links for all of the latest drivers for the laptop's hardware: http://us.toshiba.com/computers/laptops

Here is a link to their support page: http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/home.jsp

Perhaps clicking the Download link along the top and choosing your specific model.

been a long time Stefan, hope you didn't give totally give up on me..I got some bad news from one doctor, (bladder cancer) and haven't felt like messing with my camera to be totally honest with ya..BUT..I'm back on track now and actually have the camera up and running (thanks to updating my webcam driver) where iCamSource is picking it up, but i can't figure out why its not showing up on my app I got from iTunes..I typed everything in correctly and it still won't show up on iCam..if you see this, help me if you can.I promise it won't take me so long to reply(:

@WalkingHeart - Definitely no need to apologize, and I am very sorry to hear about your bad news.  :(

As for your camera now working with your iCamSource but not being able to connect from iCam, what error message do you see when you are unable to connect: No Sources Found, Broker Connection Error, or Source Connection Error?

Also, are you seeing the same error message when your iPhone is connected via 3G and the same local WiFi network as the computer running the iCamSource?
: Re: Can I view my laptop cam with iCam and my iPod
: WalkingHeart February 21, 2011, 06:21:17 PM
thanks for the reply and not giving up on me..the message reads: No Sources Found, then underneath that, there are currently no running iCamSources associated with you existing login and password..and this is on my iPod so it's wifi all the time..I'm going to uninstall both then reinstall both and see what happens..any thoughts on this one?? TYA!!

When you click the Start button in the iCamSource do you see the words "Connecting ..." or "Connected to Server" in the iCamSource Preferences window title bar? - http://skjm.com/icam/help/troubleshooting.php#icam1

Can you e-mail a screenshot of your iCamSource Preferences window to support@skjm.com after you have clicked the Start button? Hopefully I will be able to see the potential cause of the problem.

Please reference this forum post in your e-mail.

Stefan..I kept messing with it and for some reason windows picked it up and diagnosed the problem and it seems that iCamSource isn't compatible with my Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit so it put Windows in Windows XP mode to run it..and as I'm writing you it now informs me that it has stopped working..back to the drawing board..and a screen shot :)

The iCamSource should be compatible with Windows 7 Home Premium ... Did you e-mail a screenshot to support@skjm.com ?
: Re: Can I view my laptop cam with iCam and my iPod

The screenshot is there..also, in my firewall there's a place to mark iCamSource public or private..Should I mark them both or just one?? hmmm..
: Re: Can I view my laptop cam with iCam and my iPod

From your screenshot it looks like there are 4 camera entries in your Cameras list ... I am assuming that you are only attempting to connect to one webcam? If you remove the extra entries (by clicking the "-" button), does that help?

If not, and you are still seeing "Connecting ..." in the window title bar (like in the screenshot) instead of "Connected to Server" when you click the Start button, let me know.

I don't know if this is the right place to do this or not.. But Stefan if your still out there I'm having the same similar problem again.. It has been since I set the cameras to record movement in my room when I'm gone.. I came back the other night and there was this error up like, "memory over 500mb," or something Like that..well I couldn't get iCamSource to pull up again so I uninstalled it, then reinstalled it, and it was a new preference box look, and it would show only one camera.. (In the dropbox that comes down underneath the USB/firewire/ built in, it did show my other camera though) Then when I went to see if it worked on my iPod, it came up with, 'No sources found'.. Stefan if your still there, or Anybody that can help it would be much appreciated..WH

The iCamSource hasn't changed recently ... Were you running an older version of the iCamSource before?

If you reboot your computer and then relaunch the iCamSource, when you click the Start button do you see any error messages? Do you see "Connecting ..." or "Connected to Server" in the iCamSource Preferences window title?

Nice to see you again Stefan.. It really doesn't say anything.. To be honest, i don't really understand the question.. when I hit preferences the webcams show up but I don't know if they both will show up on my iPod cause when I run iCam it tells me 'No Sources Found'.. I'm not doing something right I know but can't figure out what it might be..TIA, WH

It's similar to the previous screenshot you e-mailed ... If you look in the title of the window, after you click the Start button, do you see the word "Connecting ..." or do you see "Connected to Server" ?
: Re: Can I view my laptop cam with iCam and my iPod
: WalkingHeart March 15, 2011, 03:53:15 PM
I sent you a screenshot to the same place as before of what I'm seeing cause I don't see any connecting, or connected, or anything like that on the preferences box.. I don't know what I'm doing wrong, I have gone over and over it and I just can't figure it out.. Thanks so much again..WH
: Re: Can I view my laptop cam with iCam and my iPod

In your most recent screenshot it appears that you are running a much older version of the iCamSource, version 1.4.1 ... (You can see the version number in the iCamSource Preferences window title as well).

In your first screenshot you were running the latest version, 2.2.1 ... Did you revert back to an older version? The older version does not display the "Connecting ..." or "Connected to Server" messages in the title bar.

Houston (Stefan:) we have Liftoff!! That was it.. I downloaded the wrong version.. Now my problem is when I'm on another network, say the Nursing Homes wifi, it doesn't work.. Says 'Source Connection Error'.. I've tried what it says to do in Troubleshooting by checking the auto configure box on prefrences, and it shows 'UPnP Success 12001 ->12001',  but I still get that same message..  any clue to why That is?? and also, last time I had it (iCamSource) on 'Record When Motion Detected', it did something which did a 'memory dump' ??..it was dumping something but couldn't tell what or why it did it, but I had to uninstall it and here we are again (: Thanks again in Advance!! WH

Were you able to connect previously from the Nursing Home's WiFi? It may be an issue of that network being more complex or restrictive than most.

When you check the Auto-Config Router checkbox (and see the UPnP Success message) are you still able to connect from your network?
