How to set Airlink101 500W wireless from a Mac
« on: September 01, 2010, 10:01:38 AM »
Hi there,
I'm using MBP 10.6.4 with Time Capsule for wireless system.
I bought Airlink101 SkyIPCam 500W and try to set up wireless system.
So far I could set the camera with Ethernet cable connected from Time Capsule to Airlink. I can see the image from Safari by typing 192.168.1.240, I can also see the image from iCamsource and see it on the Iphone as well.

How can I make the camera wireless?

Can I use the camera with iCam on iphone without iCamsource running on my MBP?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I know it's somewhere here on the forum but I do believe you can only set up the wireless features via Windows. At least for my 2 cameras, I was only successful doing it this way. I know for I can only hear audio with IE due to ActiveX controls in the camera software. Newer models of some Airlink cameras do support sound but those are twice the cost of the 500W's.

If you configure the camera to use a static IP address, it might use the same IP address on Wi-Fi when you disconnect the Ethernet cable.  I don't have the Airlink, but I think I was able to do that on my Linksys IP cam.

The iCamSource program does need to be running on your computer in order for iCam on your iPhone to connect to it, even with Wi-Fi cameras.  This is due to the firewall/NAT piercing techniques used by iCam.   Also, the motion detection features of iCam (push notifications and motion recording) require iCamSource to be running in order to perform the motion detection processing.

I managed to get my AirLink 500W Wireless camera setup for iCam without a PC. iCam dev team, I love you, but it's kind of silly that you haven't written out some instructions for those of us who don't own PCs.

I don't have the energy to write up a thorough explanation, but perhaps the iCam folks will fill in the gaps for y'all. Here's the gist of it:

1) Connect the camera to your Mac using the LAN cable.
2) In your computer's Network Preferences, add a new network configuration with the IP address 192.168.1.200 and the subnet mask 225.225.225.0 (make sure you click "Apply")
3) Open up a browser and go to: http://192.168.1.240

Now you have access to the camera. From here you can complete the configuration. Just use the "Smart Wizard" to get everything entered correctly.

The only tricky part is that you have to assign your camera a static IP address that's within your router's range. Here's how you'd do that if you had, say, a TimeCapsule:

1) Open your Airport Utility and select your TimeCapsule.
2) You should see your TimeCapsule's IP address (e.g. 10.0.1.1). That's your "Default Gateway."
3) Click "Manual Setup," then click "Internet" (at the top, next to "Printers"), then choose the "DHCP" tab.
4) The IP address that you give your camera needs to be between your "DHCP Beginning Address" and your "DHCP Ending Address." If your DHCP address begins at 10.0.1.2 and ends at 10.0.1.200, I'd choose something like 10.0.1.89 for your camera.
5) In all likelihood, you can keep the same Subnet Mask as before (255.255.255.0).

If you got the settings right, you're good to go. No PC needed. You can delete the network profile you created when you first connected to the camera.

Good info. I hadn't thought of that, instead I fired up an XP VMWare VM, installed their tools and config'd it that way.

I have yet to get the AirLink working on our wifi, but over cat5 it's great.

Are you trying to setup the AirLink with WPA2? If so, there's a glitch in the camera's software that prevents it from connecting to networks if the passphrase contains non-alphanumeric characters.

Also, I believe the SKJM guys told me it would only connect to networks that broadcast their SSID. That might've been another camera though...not 100% on that.

The non-alpha numeric issue is with the AirLink ... The SSID issue was with a Foscam. :)

I can get to the set up but After I set a static IP, 10.0.1.101 through the set up wizard I get nothing.

Can't access the camera any longer unless I reset it  and no connection to the wireless network.

I am using WPA/WPA2 Personal but I am not using any non-alphanumeric characters in the password.

What are the settings I need to have?

Ifrastructure or Ad-Hoc - I am using an extended Apple wirelss network using an extreme and expresses set to extend.

Authentication: Shared-key, WPA-PSK, WPA2-PSK - I have the extended network set for WPA/WPA2 Personal and as I said NO non-alphanumeric characters in the password.

Encryption:      TKIP   AES - what is this?  Is there an issue with Apple and AES or TKIP???

3 Weeks no luck....
