iCam Support / Re: iCam Service?

If you follow the directions in that link Jay posted (2nd set of directions by voip-ninja), you will be up and running in no time. Now I don't have to log in to Windows...it runs in the background. You just need to make sure your network connection is also being activated immediately upon computer boot (before login)...which I believe it is by default. If you really want to get tricky, rename the .exe file from icamsource.exe to svchost.exe or something like that. In XP, a couple of new things will appear in the task manager....srvany.exe (part of the NT resource pack) and icamsource.exe (or whatever you rename it to). Users logged in will see these listed in the task manager. In Vista, I noticed that instead of showing the name of the executable, it actually lists the service name (the name you type when you add the service) under the services column of the task manager...it does not list the actual .exe files anywhere (that I saw).

If you use this for security, I also highly recommend that you get a free dropbox account and download/setup their software, which will automatically backup the images to their website. Originally the images are simply stored on the computer's hard drive. Since thieves usually take the computer, the images would be gone for good unless you managed to view/save them to your iphone before the power is disconnected. I added the dropbox program as a service so it starts up upon boot along with icamsource. In fact, I believe I made icamsource dependent upon dropbox, so that dropbox would load first. dropbox link: https://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTUzMzgyNjE5 (info thanks to Zarkov at http://skjm.com/forum/index.php?topic=615.msg3069#msg3069)

And finally, if you ever access your computer while you're away from home using a RDP app (like WinAdmin), you can get a free dynamic dns account from dyndns.com and their free software which keeps your IP address up-to-date in their system. I run this as a service now as well...so my IP address will always be updated and I will always be able to access my computer (as long as my router with correct firewall/port forwarding settings doesn't crash). If you don't use this feature, you might consider it...as icamsource does crash occasionally. If it does, you can login from 1,000 miles away and restart the service. On a security note, I set my Windows account to lockout after 3 incorrect password entries in order to reduce the chances of some hacker gaining access. If you do that, just make sure you have a (strong) password set for both your account and the administrator account. You will have to access the admin account in order to unlock your account...should the password ever be entered incorrectly 3 times in a row (or whatever value you define).

Stefan, I spoke too soon concerning the 3g access. I installed icamsource 1.4.2 on another computer (3 total instances under my username/password)...tried to access it over 3g today and crashed 2 of the 3 instances (the ones carrying video). The blank video with audio only was still up, however I could not hear sound. Not sure if that was a fluke thing. Have you received any logs from anyone yet? If not, I'm willing to reinstall 1.4.2 (I just downgraded again) and send you the logs of the crash.

At one point, I manually restarted the instance of icamsource that kept crashing on Windows startup and it seemed to work ok. However, I think I only accessed it from my home network.

Wow...ignore me. Somehow I typed the icamsource password twice...resulting in the wrong password for the IP cam's video feed. Der der der! Thanks for getting back to me so quick. This is awesome!

My camera is a D-Link DSC-910. The video feed is username/password protected, which is why there are 2 sets of usernames and passwords...one so icamsource can access the IP cam video feed, and the other is the icamsource username/password that I type in on my phone.

The way I typed it is exactly how I typed it in my Windows shortcut and placed in the startup folder so it'd start automatically when I log in. It works fine when I execute it as a startup shortcut...I can access the camera from my phone and it is stable.

Last time it crashed, I got the error code, which was 0xc0000005. I found a site (http://www.0xc0000005.com) that suggested several possibilities, including one caused by DEP. I allowed an exception for icamsource, and still have the same problem. I doubt it's my RAM, as I don't have any other issues with my computer. I'm virus-free according to my anti-virus software (which I know doesn't really mean I'm necessarily virus-free). I haven't installed/uninstalled many programs, so my registry shouldn't be too sloppy.

What version of icamsource are you running?

785
I have 2 shortcuts in my startup folder in my Start menu...one of them executes the icamsource for the IP camera, and the other executes the icamsource for the blank ManyCam. So once I log in to the computer, almost immediately, the blank icamsource with audio crashes. The problem was solved by downgrading to ipcamsource 1.4.1.

I run 2 instances of icamsource, one for an IP camera, and one for a blank ManyCam with audio. The blank one works perfectly per your instructions. The IP cam source executes, but crashes as soon as I try to access it from my iPhone. I tried disabling the blank one to make sure it wasn't the fact that 2 instances were going at once, and the IP cam source still crashed. I tried with both of the newest versions of icamsource (1.4.1 and 1.4.2)...crashes both of them. This is what my registry entry for the IP cam looks like (both in the appropriate place and both with the appropriate registry names):

Application: c:\program files\icamsource\icamsource.exe
AppParameters: -url=http://192.168.10.100/video.cgi -u=icamusername -p=icampassword -cu=ipcamusername -cp=ipcampassword -m -desc="Garage"

Any ideas?

P.S. If I can get this working, you are my hero...this rocks. I also made a service for dropbox, which backs up the motion events off-site for free...and a service for ManyCam (blank camera with audio). Thanks for the directions!

787
1.4.2 only crashed consistently for me when I ran 2 instances of icamsource. I had 1 instance feeding an IP cam (stable) and 1 instance feeding a blank manycam with audio only (crashed immediately after running at startup). I did have a problem once with the IP cam instance crashing after access from my iPhone...but it crashed when I used the delete all feature for motion events. At that time, I also had the audio instance of icamsource running as well, but that one seemed to be stable. Ever since then, the audio version has crashed at startup (which I didn't bother re-running), and the IP cam instance has been stable...even using the delete all motion events feature. All access attempts were made using 3G.

I uninstalled 1.4.2 and reinstalled 1.4.1. Now both instances (the IP cam and audio) are running properly at bootup, and are stable.

There is a workaround...although not a great one. It would require you to leave the video feed visible on your desktop whenever you want to monitor the video via iCam. If that isn't an issue, you will need to download/install ManyCam (free)....then under sources in ManyCam, choose Desktop > Custom Desktop. You will want to make sure and locate the video feed on your desktop in an area that would not be interrupted by popups, error messages, etc (to keep from triggering a false motion event). I have no idea how good/bad the quality of the video would be (I would force your image size to 640x480 in ManyCam...and possibly choose the "Improved Quality" option). Once you get it all set up, you will choose ManyCam as your source in icamsource.

I'm not sure if the screensaver would interfere with this working correctly...but if you try it, please let me know. I am curious...just not curious enough to set it up myself.

« on: March 23, 2010, 06:46:19 AM »
Hmmm, once I had some more motion events saved, I used the iCam app on my phone to delete all motion events, and no crash this time. I have accessed both sources (the IP cam and the audio source) and no crash. Maybe it was a one-time thing. Before doing that testing, I did verify that, despite the crash of icamsource earlier, it did manage to delete all motion events. At this point, I'm not sure what caused the crash. I'll play with it some and test a few variables. If I find anything specific or have any further crashes, I'll report back. I love your app!

iCam Support / new icamsource crash on XP machine
« on: March 23, 2010, 05:59:12 AM »
I'm running Windows XP (SP3 with all current updates installed). I installed the new icamsource, and had 2 instances running...one with an IP mjpeg source, and one with a blank manycam source combined with a microphone source from my computer's sound card. On my phone, I accessed the motion events for the IP camera and attempted to use the delete all motion events feature. I'm not sure if that's what caused the crash or not, but the icamsource with the IP camera feed crashed pretty much immediately after attempting to delete all motion events. The other icamsource (with the audio and blank image) continued to function normally. On my phone, I obviously lost the ability to view the IP camera since the icamsource feeding it had crashed. Upon crashing, it asked to send an error report to Microsoft...I copied and pasted what I could from the error report in case it might help you:

AppName: icamsource.exe      AppVer: 0.0.0.0     AppStamp:4ba7f44d
ModName: kernel32.dll      ModVer: 5.1.2600.5781      ModStamp:49c4f482
fDebug: 0       Offset: 000024f2

It's not a huge deal for me, as I can remote into my system from anywhere with my phone and restart the icamsource...but I was thinking it would be awesome if you had a tiny extra program running in tandem with icamsource that would detect if icamsource had crashed/stopped/etc and would automatically restart it. Maybe have a simple GUI or something where we could type in the command lines for all instances of icamsource that we want running. Just thinking outloud!

Was using dropbox but it was generating an extra chunk of constant extra traffic. Love dropbox. Might return to using it for iCam.

I don't know if this helps any...but under the network settings in the dropbox program, you can limit the upload and/or download rate. If you are concerned about bandwidth usage, you might check into those settings. Of course, that would increase the amount of time it takes to sync the files.

Thanks. Any possibility of adding the ability to view motion events on the web?

Try www.dropbox.com. Another user on here suggested it...keeps your motion events sync'd with their website, where you can login to view the motion events on the web. Search for dropbox on here for more info.

You allow the babysitter to use your computer? And you allow her to close a program that you want running? It would be easier to tell her not to tamper with any programs that you have running. Ideally, for virus/malware purposes, it would be really smart to not allow her to use the computer at all...especially under your user account, which I'm assuming has admin priveledges.

That aside, this information might help you (if you have a Windows PC). I'm not a Mac computer person, so I can't help you with a Mac.

Create an account on your computer for the babysitter (without admin priveledges) or enable the guest account (preferred and easier). When you step away from your laptop, hold down the Windows key on the keyboard and hit the L key. This will lock your screen, leaving your account signed in. Now the babysitter can login as a guest or under the account that you created for her. Since she is not an admin, she won't be able to close the icamsource program...at least not without rebooting the computer.

There are some programs out there that will allow you to run other programs in a hidden state (not show up in the system tray)...but I didn't see any free ones. There are ways to use some program scripts to hide icons on the system tray...but I think it just changes the icon to a blank image...meaning a user could still right-click on the blank area and shutdown icamsource. There is also a way to permanently change the task bar icon for the program, and you could rename the program itself to something like "audiomanager.exe"...just make sure you update any startup links to the new program name. Another thing to take into consideration...any user with appropriate permissions could use the task manager to kill icamsource.exe. The guest account should not be able to kill programs executed under another user, however.

Out of curiousity, are you using your laptop's webcam as the camera source? If you have an IP camera, you could run icamsource on any computer in the house with an Internet connection...it wouldn't need to be the laptop.

iCam Support / Feature request - bypass broker server
« on: March 14, 2010, 07:05:03 AM »
It would be really nice if there were a way to bypass the broker server...it would result in slightly quicker connection time to video feeds and reduce the chances that we would lose connectivity all together should your broker server and backup server go down at the same time. Maybe have it set up by default to go through the broker server, but provide an option to bypass it with a specific server address...for those of us with static IP's or DDNS and the technical know-how to set it up correctly. Thanks!

I'm not a Mac user, so I can't comment on that...although someone else on here did mention Apple Script or something to start/stop the icamsource program.

In Windows, you could write a couple of simple batch files (icamsource has a command line option)...

  • one batch file to kill icamsource:

taskkill /f /im icamsource.exe

  • and one batch file to run icamsource:

c:
cd "c:\program files\icamsource"
icamsource.exe -u=icamusername -p=icampassword -url=http://192.168.10.100/video.cgi -cu=camerausername -cp=camerapassword -m -desc="Description of Camera Source"

  • Finally, use Task Scheduler to execute the start/stop batch files on certain days and/or at certain times.

(other command-line options are here: http://skjm.com/forum/index.php?topic=462.0)
