Title: iCamSource 2.0 BETA
Post by: Stefan on July 05, 2010, 12:53:07 PM
The next major version of the iCamSource is now available: iCamSource 2.0 BETA

Major new features include:

- The ability to connect to multiple (up to 16) webcams or IP cameras from a single instance of the iCamSource. (No more making copies of the application or writing batch files if you have more than one camera.)
- The ability to adjust the compression of the video stream to favor better-quality video or a higher frame-rate.
- The ability to reduce the frequency that the motion detection processing is performed or even completely disable it to reduce the overall CPU usage on older hardware.
- The ability to schedule when the recording of motion events and the sending of push notifications are enabled.
- Router auto-configuration that allows most UPnP or NAT-PMP enabled routers to automatically forward the necessary ports when needed.

The Mac OS X version (10.4.11 or later) can be downloaded here: http://skjm.com/icam/iCamSource2.0.dmg

The Windows version can be downloaded here: http://skjm.com/icam/iCamSetup2.0.exe

Please reply to this forum post if you have any issues or discover anything that isn't working as expected. We had to re-arrange a lot of the underlying structure to support multiple cameras within the iCamSource, so hopefully we were able to do so without introducing any new issues. :)

EDIT - The latest version (2.0.1 BETA) includes some minor bug fixes: http://skjm.com/icam/iCamSource2.0.1.dmg
EDIT #2 - The latest version (2.0.2 BETA) includes some additional bug fixes: http://skjm.com/icam/iCamSource2.0.2.dmg
EDIT #3 - The latest version (2.0.3 BETA) includes some additional bug fixes: http://skjm.com/icam/iCamSource2.0.3.dmg
EDIT #4 -  The Windows version (2.0 BETA) is now available: http://skjm.com/icam/iCamSetup2.0.exe
EDIT #5 - This BETA testing round has ended with the release of version 2.1 of the iCamSource. Many thanks to all of the BETA testers. :)

I installed the new version but am getting "No Sources Found" on both WiFi and 3G.

I double checked the username and password, but no luck. This didn't happen with the previous version...

EDIT: This only happens when "Auto-Config Router" is checked. It's too bad, because I hadn't been able to get iCam working over 3G, and I though this might make it work. I'm using an AirPort Extreme.

That is odd that checking Auto-Config Router would cause a No Sources Found error message.

What is the status message that appears above the Auto-Config Router checkbox when you click the Start button?

There is no status message.

Does the same thing happen with the latest version, 2.0.1 ?

Still the same with 2.0.1 I'm afraid.

That is strange that the Auto-Config Router checkbox would cause that issue. Does your webcam's preview video still appear in the iCamSource Preferences window when it is checked?

If you try this different BETA version (1.4.2.6) that is basically 1.4.2.5 with the Auto-Config Router logic added in, do you still experience the same issue when the checkbox is checked? - http://skjm.com/icam/iCamSource1.4.2.6.dmg

If so, then it may be an issue with your router ... That the iCamSource is getting hung up for some reason trying to auto-configure it, and the remaining initialization is never happening. When you select your AirPort Extreme router in your computer's AirPort Utility program, how is it described? Is it a "AirPort Extreme (Simultaneous Dual-Band)" (which are the newest ones) or maybe an "AirPort Extreme with 802.11n (Gigabit Ethernet)" (which is the previous generation), or is it even older?

If you click the Manual Setup on the router and then choose the "Internet" button followed by the "NAT" tab is the "Enable NAT Port Mapping Protocol" checkbox checked?

1.4.2.6 still experiences the same problem.

I have an "AirPort Extreme with 802.11n (Fast Ethernet)"

The NAT Port Mapping Protocol box is checked, but when I try to update the router settings, I get the error: "The DCHP range you have entered conflicts with the WAN IP Address of your Airport Wireless Device." The DCHP beginning address is 192.168.0.200 and the ending address is 192.168.0.250

The DHCP range conflicts with the WAN IP? That's odd.  ???

Is your router's Internet > Internet Connection > Connection Sharing setting set to "Share a public IP address" ?

Is your router's Internet > TCP/IP > IP Address (that will be your WAN IP) the same as what is reported by http://whatismyipaddress.com ? Or is it a 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x IP?

The Connection Sharing is set to "Off (Bridge Mode)" Should I change this?

The WAN IP does not match the one on the site. The one in the utility is a 192.168.... and the one on the site is 99.225.xxx.xx

If that is the case (it being in Bridge mode) then whatever the AirPort Extreme is connected to, be it another router or a modem / router combination, is actually acting as the router on your network.

What is the make and model of the device that the AirPort is connected to?
Title: Re: iCamSource 2.0 BETA

It's a Dlink Wired Router, DI 604UP

I tried port forwarding manually from it, but I'm not sure which IP to enter into the "Private IP" box.
Title: Re: iCamSource 2.0 BETA
Post by: Samz2 on July 11, 2010, 07:01:41 PM
Okay, I've re-wired the system, completely removing the D-Link router, and it works perfectly. When I check the Auto-Config box, it says NAT-PMP Success 12000 --> 12000, and iCam now works over 3G without manual port forwarding.

Thanks!

Windows beta soon? :)
Title: Re: iCamSource 2.0 BETA

Depends on your definition of "soon" :)

I'm currently working on the Windows version of iCamSource.  We usually develop the Mac version first, then make the Windows version to mimic the layout and functionality of the Mac version.  Most updates are minor, so the Windows changes are done a day or so after the Mac changes.  This update is a major one, so the Windows version will be available a few weeks after the Mac version.  I'm still in development, so I'm not sure when it'll be ready for testing.  My best guess is a week or two (if everything goes smoothly).

I got that too, try to fiddle with it. Try things like quiting iCamSource, unplug camera, start iCam, plug in camera... etc.

The beta 2.0.1 seems great, but it crashes pretty often for me, can't quite narrow down why, but it seems to be that when there is alot of motion on either camera it fails.

Dean - If the iCamSource BETA is crashing on you, can you e-mail any iCamSource crash logs that you find in Library / Logs / CrashReporter in your home folder that start with "iCamSource" to support@skjm.com? Any crash logs should help us narrow down the cause of your crash problem.

Thanks! :)

Also, I'm having some trouble configuring a IP camera with the 2.0.1 Beta... It works in the standard non beta version, but when I try it with the same settings on the beta, it just keeps a still frame of on of my other USB cams...

I was having the same problem as Dean, that one of my cams just freezes with the new beta.  I have tested 2.0.2 and it is still doing it.  My wireless cam works fine, but my built in iSight will not work with the new beta.  Also, the new beta disables my iSight completely so it cannot be used in any other programs as well.  If I have iCam running with the iSight configured (not working though, just frozen pic of other cam) then it won't work with Skype.  Any ideas on what is causing this?

If you run just the BETA with the single camera (the iSight) configured, does it still lock up? What is you choose No Audio? If you unplug any USB peripherals from the Mac, does that have any effect?
Title: Re: iCamSource 2.0 BETA
Post by: swede76 on August 16, 2010, 07:18:12 AM
I tried running just the iSight and still no luck, just shows a grey screen instead of a video stream.  Tried no audio as well and no other USB peripherals installed.  It seems like the iCamSource is somehow disabling the iSight completely for some reason.

Does the latest BETA 2.0.3 fix your issue? It had a problem in it where cameras that were added or removed were not capturing correctly until after you closed & restarted the iCamSource application.

Glad to hear that 2.0.3 fixed the issue. :)

Currently the Starting and Stopping of the iCamSource does Start and Stop all of the cameras at once.

Hey Stefan, I'm pretty sure you changed it so that the scheduling is now universal for all cameras? Is this true? I sort of liked it a lot more when I could set up each camera separately... :-\
Title: Re: iCamSource 2.0 BETA
Post by: Stefan on August 17, 2010, 08:11:28 PM
That shouldn't be the case, no.  ???

Are you seeing that in the Schedule settings in the iCamSource Preferences window? Or in the actions of the iCamSource itself?

Hmm, did some testing, looks like almost 1/10 times I change something on one camera, it applies changes to all cams... Whether it be deleting settings for a day altogether or just changing the time. Very weird!  :-[

This is on beta 2.0.3 by thee way.

Very strange ... I have been unable to replicate this so far. ???

Do you know if this is something new to 2.0.3? Or can you recreate the same issue in the previous BETA versions?

Are you changing a setting under the Schedule tab for one camera and then selecting another camera to see the change has carried over to all the other cameras? Do you have the same number of settings for each camera? When you click on the other cameras does the name of the camera in parenthesis change in the "Schedule (<camera description>)" to the appropriate one?

How many cameras do you have configured?

It was happening on the source app, and on iCam, I tested it at work with the built in iSight and another camera and couldnt get it to do the same thing. When I got home I tested some more, it was still happening. I seem to have fixed the problem by trashing the iCam prefs and starting over... I'll let you know if it happens again :S

Did you fix the problem by trashing the iCam prefs or the iCamSource prefs? If it's the iCamSource prefs that might make sense if it got into a weird state from a previous beta version.

Thanks for all the great feedback Dean! :)

I dont have the beta for v2 for my iPhone yet, but I installed the iCamsource Beta 2 and from my iPhone or via the Webpage, I am unable to view the cameras, broker error, ports are set the same as before.

UPDATE:

I can now see one of my camera's via iCam or the iCamweb page and the iMac camera does not show up at all, even in the icamsource application on the mac. The other 4 cams give the broker error. I have the exact login info as all the others, but only 1 shows.

UPDATE 2: Now I restarted iCamSource and I see 3 out of the 5 cam's (still no iSight camera)

Refreshed iCam on the iphone again, now only one cam showing!

I found that if I don't have the iSight added to the list of cameras and if I have auto config router enabled, it all works!

Restarted iCamSource and now see 2 cams (not iSight)

Thank you for the feedback.

If you are Stopping and re-Starting the iCamSouce it may be an issue of the older version of iCam only being able to connect to 4 iCamSources at a time. It takes about 60 seconds for old iCamSources to "time out" with the iCam Broker Server, so if you run 4 webcams in your iCamSource at a time, wait a minute before trying to connect with iCam, and you should be able to connect to all of them.

iCamWeb doesn't currently support more than 4 cameras at a time, either.

Hi all,

I have installed iCamSource 2.0 for windows, It looks great.

But I can't connet using iPhone. The Error message is

"No Sources Found"

"There are currently no running iCamSources associated with your

exiting login and password"

I check my login and password, there are no error. UPNP work well and shows port 12000:12000.

Webcam also works, I cam see my image in the iCamSource windows. But I just can't connect by using iCam.

does iCam need to update to iCam 2.0 beta for iCamSource?

And I have some suggestion for iCamSource:

1.   Schedule now only support ON/OFF push notification and motion detection. Can add the ability to turn ON/OFF camera in schedule?

2.   It will be so great to turn ON/OFF camera using iCam so I can turn off iCamsource without opening my PC when I get home.

3.   PTZ please. iCam is one of the nice surveillance app on iPhone. If add PTZ function, It will be the best! I do pay another $10 just for this function.

Thanks!

PS: I have tried WiFi, 3G, iCam Web, all the same result and error message.

leeway99 - Thanks for helping with the Beta test.  iCam doesn't need to be updated to iCam 2.0 Beta.

Please send an email to support@skjm.com with your computer's external IP address and the iPhone's external IP address.

To get the iPhone's IP address, launch the iCam app on your iPhone and let it connect for 10 seconds or so.  Then immediately go to http://whatismyip.com in your iPhone's web browser to get the IP address your iPhone is using at that moment.

To get the computer's IP address, go to http://whatismyip.com in your computer's web browser.

Please mention that you are testing the Windows iCamSource 2.0 Beta in your email.

Our status of testing so far with iCamSource 2.0.3 for mac with 2 iphones and a ipad.
iCam works fine with 6 cameras, 5 usb and 1 firewire (old i-fire unibrain)

Wrong aspect ratios is the biggest annoyance, we got 2 new usb webcams that uses 720p HD resolution, and both get a stretched image. Would it be much work to keep the image aspect ratio like it works on regular videoes on iOS devices? (with a icon to zoom to no black borders)

The cameras that gives a streched image are Microsoft LifeCam Cinema and a Creative Live! Cam Socialize HD, both uses 1280x720 resolution.
the other cameras are 2 internal iSight, a old Phillips ToUcam pro ( macam driver) and unibrain i-fire (firewire).

I had the beta installed on my Mac but when I attempt to add two USB cameras (one being the built in iSight) the program will only initialize one camera. It seems to be whichever one is in the first spot. It doesn't throw any errors but one just wont turn on and the display will show a frozen picture from the active camera when I click on it with the feed started. It simply doesn't show the non operational camera on the iphone. It works fine if I use two instances of 1.4.2.5.

I second that. I don't want to leave my webcam active with this program all the time because sometimes I like to use it for video chat. But I also don't want to have to remember to start the feed every time I leave the house. Would be great if I could just switch my feeds on and off from the iPhone app.

Thanks for the feedback, guys! :) We tried and replicate the "two USB cameras, but only one works" issue on our own hardware but were unable to. What type of Mac (iMac, MacBook, etc.) are you using? Have you tried unplugging any other USB devices from it or switching the ports that the webcams are plugged into? What if you choose "No Audio" for the Audio drop-downs? What are the make and model of the webcams?

As for the 16:9 image, we will probably letterbox it, yes ... Although theoretically when zoomed in it should be able to be seen full-screen on an iPhone and letter boxed on an iPad. Standard 4:3 aspect images fill the entire screen on the iPad with iCam 2.0 ... We'll just need to make the appropriate changes in the iCamSource to letterbox it. (This is why the layout had to be different for the 4:3 iPad when moving from the 16:9 iPhone / iPod touch.)

heuveljoram - There are two potential causes for the No Sources Found error:

1) The login and password on the iCamSource and iCam do not match. (Please note that they are both case sensitive.)
2) The iCamSource on your computer is unable to communicate with the iCam Broker Server.

If you have made sure that your computer's firewall software is "allowing" the iCamSource to communicate with the Internet, then the next step is to go to http://whatismyipaddress.com/ from your computer and e-mail support@skjm.com what it says your computer's external IP address is so that we can further troubleshoot the problem.

Im using the lastest beta on Windows 7 64bit and its working great.

One thing though when I autostart the program by placing it into the startup folder and I use the 'Start minimized option' the program does load up on startup of the PC but the program doesnt auto minimize to the system tray which would be very useful, it loads to the taskbar instead.

If I press the 'X' on the program window then the program does minimize to the system tray and not the taskbar.

I would like the program to automatically minimize to the system tray on loadup instead of it being put into the taskbar.
Could this be implemented?.

Thanks.

If you check the Auto Start checkbox in the iCamSource Preferences window it should be hidden automatically when the iCamSource starts.

Just been checking out the 2.0 beta against the latest stable release.

I must say that beta 2.0 streams video alot smoother over wifi then stable.

But

Ive been watching the throughput from the beta over wi-fi and it tops out at about 250k upload but it keeps dropping now and then to around 30k then to 150k then back to
250k. This makes the video stutter and pause when im viewing full screen on my iphone 4. Thumbnail view on the iphone is very fluid.

I havent got any other programs running on my PC to slow down the upload speed, the stable release is far slower, that uploads at about 30-50k so beta 2.0 is a great improvement but thought i would let you know about my findings so if possible we could get a steady upload keeping the video fluid without stutter.

Ive tried different webcams and its not down to these that alter the upload speed or the speed of my pc as the processor is only at 20% load.
The preview in the icamsource PC program is constantly fluid.

Im running my iphone on the same wi-fi network as icamsource is running on.
Hopefully theres something that can be changed to get a constant upload of around 250k keeping the video fluid on fullscreen on the iphone.

I installed Beta 2 and have a small (tongue in cheek) problem.  One of my laptops is a 10" Asus.  When I bring up iSource I can't see the Start button and I can't re-size the app.

****************

After playing awhile I found that sometimes there is a slider on the right side, sometimes not..  Even with it is I can't get all the way to the bottom.  It was a wee bit shorter or my screen was a wee bit taller.

Scoobydoo - If you switch back and forth between the two iCamSources (stable vs. beta) do you continue to see the same performance difference between the two?

Switching between the beta and the stable I find that the beta 2.0 gives a much better framerate/update.

Im really impressed with the beta, just that it doesnt seem to keep a constant upload speed of about 250k through my wireless network, it drops down to below 100k at times causing the slow framerate/update of the picture in full screen on the iphone.
When it drops below 100k upload i havent seen the processor load increase so its not to do with this, and there is nomore network traffic causing it either, it looks like it may be something in the program (icamsource beta 2.0) thats causing it.

The stable gives a really low upload speed, only about 80k or so when in full screen on the iphone, so that beta is much much better at 250k. The stable does keep a constant 80k upload though and doesnt drop.

I have installed the windows beta on 3 seperate computers and had them all running for the past week. However, one by one they each stopped working and now each will not open at all.

When clicked you get the "icamsource has stopped working".

This happened on each machione over the past 2 days. I have repaired and re-installed but no luck.

Any help would be appreciated

Please check the Process list in your Task Manager to make sure there aren't any other instances of iCamSource running.

If you reboot the computer, does that have any effect on the behavior?

Hi this is my fisrt post, and I would like to say thankyou for a great app I purchased it this week after seeing it in the newspaper in the UK.

down to business, I installed beta 2.0 (windows) and I must admit everything about it is more simple aka it just works well apart from the sound..  I have had no sound on any webcam (I get ringer volume on iphone 3g) I have tried a HP Premium KQ245AA, Microsoft Quickcam and another wireless security cam which I do not have the details for atm.

my system is win 7 amd 64 3000 with 4 gig ram the testing I have done is as follows.

so after getting bored of trying to figure the sound issue out I decided to roll back to the current stable version 1.4.2.5 and the sound worked as intended of the bat, therefore I thought I would let you know that there might be an issue with the sound and the beta 2.0 for windows.
If you already know this is an issue then please delete this topic, or if its because I would require version 2.0 on the iphone so it matches the client then let me know and I will wait for the release of 2.0 on the app store finally if you would like me to do any further testing or to try anything out then please feel free to ask.

Many Thanks,
knighty101

JohnAlex731 - I purchased the same webcam today, and it does work with the iCamSource on my Mac Pro. Does the webcam work with the 1.4.2.5 version of the iCamSource?

As for the 16:9 image being squished into a 4:3 aspect ratio, that is what the webcam displays on the other Mac webcam applications I tried it with, and it turns out that is what is returned directly by the webcam to the iCamSource: A squished image. The same webcam in Windows (with the appropriate drivers installed) returns a 4:3 image that is cropped on either side, so I suppose it is a driver issue.

I don't really want to stretch the image out and then crop it, since that will degrade the quality of the image.

williamsww - Do you have the Auto-Start option enabled in iCamSource?

By default, iCamSource does very little when it is launched, so a crash on launch usually indicates that some prerequisites are missing.  Most of the work is done when the Start button is pushed, and a crash at that point usually indicates a problem connecting to the camera (hardware/driver issues).

If the Auto-Start option is on, then all of that is performed on launch.

Windows affects both cases, so please make sure that Windows is fully updated through Windows Update.

I am running the latest iCamSource 2.0 Beta on my windows 7 machine.   There are 4 wifi camera's connected.  I am running the icam iphone application version from iTunes.

I setup a schedule for each camera to start recording M-F 8am, with no push notification.

Now no matter what I do from my icam iphone application, no camera will record motion.  I have flipped the Record Motion Events setting from my iphone, but nothing records.

Do you have any idea what happening?
Title: Re: iCamSource 2.0 BETA

Do you see this same behavior in the release version (1.4.2.5)?

What directory are motion event recordings being stored in?  Windows 7 has a lot of directories that it won't allow write access to applications.  The default folder is the My Pictures folder, which always has write permissions by default.
Title: Re: iCamSource 2.0 BETA

icamsource 1.4.2.5 has not displayed the same behavior.  I have been using 1.4.2.5 for several months.

Only when I installed the 2.0 version did I experience the no recording problem.  I have uninstalled 2.0 and put 1.4.2.5 back on my windows 7 machine.   I will check the recording directory location.

One problem with 1.4.2.5, is the everyday one of my four icamsource processes stops running (same machine) after about 12 hours.  So each morning I have restart the one missing or stop the remain three, then auto start (batch file) all four again.

I have the same Lifecam HD 5001 and it works on both my MacBook and Mac Pro with 2.0.3. Have you tried unplugging it and re-plugging it in? Is it the only Camera listed in the iCamSource? Do you have any other webcams engaged at the same time?

I've been experimenting a lot with the FireWire iSight, Logitech Pro 9000, and Lifecam HD 5001 on my Mac Pro. The iSight (since it is on the FireWire bus) doesn't interfere with the two USB webcams, but I am unable to get both USB webcams to function at the same time in the iCamSource. The same goes for if I try to run one in Photo Booth and the other in iChat.

I was also unable to get both USB webcams working on the Mac Pro in Windows 7 in Parallels using the iCamSource 2.0 BETA.

On my MacBook (which has a Built-In iSight that is also on the USB bus) I am able to get 2 of the 3 webcams to work at the same time in the iCamSource and with other webcam applications. Actually, with Photo Booth and iChat, I cannot get the Logitech to work with either of the other two webcams, but the Built-In iSight and Lifecam HD 5001 will co-exist in Photo Booth and iChat. In the iCamSource the Logitech will work with one of the other webcams, just not both.

I am unsure as to the cause of this, but I do think it is an issue that is independent from the iCamSource. (At least it seems that way.)

I guess the moral of the story is: Yes, some users have been able to connect more than one USB webcam to their computer and use them with the iCamSource, but your mileage may vary. (If you use multiple network IP cameras with the iCamSource you will not encounter this problem.)

In debugging the code of the iCamSource everything seems to be working as expected when the image and audio capture callbacks are setup for each webcam. The problem is that the callbacks are not being called, which I am assuming has to do with the operating system not being able to fully engage the hardware and capture any data in some situations.

What error message do you see when you are unable to connect via 3G?

Now I cant reproduce it :-). Ive found that my ADSL was disconecting semi-periodically, I think that these re-connections (my ip changes every re-connection) are the source of  the reported problems. iCamSource has some way to notice "my valid ip changed, I have to re-stablish my address:port" ?

Now the problem is another: Only one of the cameras are showing up in iCam (stable release from app store).

There may be a way for us to have the iCamSource realize that the external IP address has changed, yes.

As for only one of the cameras showing up in iCam, is this over local WiFi? Do you see any error messages in iCam if you let it try to connect for 30-60 seconds? Are the iCam Login and Password combinations the same for both cameras and in iCam?

over local wifi AND over 3G. No error messages in iCam, only missing cameras (1 instead of 2), Ive tried the 'reconnect' button, same camera, the same one missing. Ive just verified the login/password combinations, no aparent errors on iCamSource side of things.

iCamWeb is showing only one camera, too.

Was having same issues as Dean (and others) (iCamSource 2.0.2 and 2.0.3 on new macmini w/snow leopard, iCam 2.0 beta on iPhone 4 4.0.1, 2 cameras: isight and Lifecam HD-5001) Can confirm that trashing old prefs file (user/Library/Preferences/com.skjm.icamsource.plist)  has made it all good so far. (Thanks, Dean)

I also get the squish on the HD-5001 (16:9 camera) Maybe just a "letter boxing" option for each camera would help?

Great work, guys!

I have 6 Cameras at 2 locations (4 on an iMac & 2 on Windows PC) all working beautifully on iCam Source 2.0 & 2.03 BETA!! Problem is that on iCam l can only see 4 cameras at a time on either my iPhone or iPad. I see in your message you are running iCam 2.0 Beta. Where do we get that from and how can l install it on my iPad/iPhone via iTunes?

Cheers
